Authors

Wizard Books welcomes submissions from children’s authors on all sorts of subjects. However, while we will take the time to consider proposals for any age group, please understand that our current emphasis is on 9-years plus. To submit a proposal, send us a cover letter together with a detailed proposal, synopsis, table of contents, sample of your writing and CV (listing any relevant previous publications) or biog. Please ensure you include all relevant contact details:

  • name
  • postal address
  • e-mail
  • daytime phone number or mobile

Proposal guidelines

As a rule, the proposal (not inc. cover letter, synopsis, contents or extract) should be no longer than four A4 sheets. To help you put together a comprehensive proposal, we've compiled a list of questions that you might like to consider. It isn't essential to include answers to all the questions below, though we appreciate all further information that we receive.

General

  • In two or three sentences, what is my book about?
  • Where does it 'fit' in the Wizard Books list – fiction, non-fiction, poetry, picture book?
  • What makes this book special, original, important, marketable?
  • Why should I write this book for Wizard – what are my ‘selling points’ as an author?
  • Why is a new book needed and why do you wish to write it?
  • What will readers gain from it?
  • What is the estimated length of the book (word count)?

Market

  • What age group is the book aimed at?
  • Who in particular will be interested in purchasing the book? (i.e. what is the target audience)
  • Could your book be sold outside the UK? Would it work in other countries?

Competition

  • Is your book in direct competition with any existing titles?
  • Do you know of any similar books that are forthcoming?
  • What distinguishes your book from the competition?

Additional - Non-fiction only

  • How will you approach the subject and present the topics?
  • What themes and concepts will be developed?
  • What will be included and what will be left out (and why)?
  • Does your book tie in with any school programmes, learning stages or syllabuses?

All initial inquiries and proposals should be addressed to Editorial Manager, Wizard. Email wizard@iconbooks.co.uk or send your submission to Editorial Manager, Wizard Books, Icon Books Ltd., The Old Dairy, Brook Road, Thriplow, Cambridge SG8 7RG, UK.
