The need for a new teenage guide

A survey carried out recently for the sexual health charity Marie Stopes International (MSI) revealed that one in six parents have not discussed sex education with their children and one in 20 have no intention of broaching the subject. 42% of parents with a 15-year-old child had never talked to them about sex-related issues. In fact, one in five parents believed their children would find out about sex themselves. But where are these kids going to get the information they need?

If parents are relying on schools to ready their children for sexual relationships, then perhaps they need to rethink. Recent Ofsted studies have suggested that the standards of teaching of sexual health education and the law in relation to sex fall far below what is needed.

In a country with the highest teenage birth rate in western Europe, this is certainly not difficult to believe. The facts speak for themselves: one-third of under-16s are sexually active but only half of under-16s use a condom the first time they have sex; 90,000 UK teens fall pregnant each year; almost 8,000 of these are under 16; 2,200 are under 14; every year 15,000 girls under 18 have an abortion.
